Workplace Violence Against Nurses

Description of the Issue

Workplace violence (WPV) in nursing encompasses physical, psychological, sexual, and racial aggression directed toward nurses by patients, visitors, or colleagues. Globally, 8–38 % of health-care workers experience some form of violence during their career (World Health Organization [WHO], 2022). In health-care settings, nurses are at the highest risk because they provide continuous, front-line patient care (Kafle et al., 2022; Bernardes et al. (2020) reported that 88.9 % of Brazilian emergency-unit nurses had suffered at least one violent episode, most commonly verbal abuse (38 %), mobbing (25 %), and physical aggression (11 %).

Such incidents significantly affect the quality of care. Victims often develop anxiety, insomnia, and burnout, leading to absenteeism, reduced concentration, and poor patient satisfaction (Bernardes et al., 2020). Similarly, Kafle et al. (2022) emphasized that WPV fosters fear, guilt, and low morale, impairing nurse–patient relationships and ultimately threatening safety and outcomes. A cross-national survey by Shiao et al. (2014) found that WPV correlates with higher staff turnover and reduced productivity, compounding workforce shortages. Therefore, WPV is not merely an occupational hazard it is a systems-level quality-of-care and patient-safety concern……………..Purchase the full solution for $10
